X-Rays

Painless and fast procedure producing medical images by utilising X-rays. X-ray imaging is commonly performed to evaluate the chest including the lungs and heart, the bowel, the bones and joints. It is important to inform the radiographer if you are pregnant or suspected to be pregnant. Medicolegal imaging.

Bone Densitometry / Dexa Scan

Assessing the bone density by means of low dose x-ray imaging. This is a quick and painless procedure. A bone density value in grams is obtained including a T-score and Z-score and this determines whether the bone density is normal for age, is reduced with osteopenia or significantly decreased with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the abnormal loss of bone resulting in fragile bones with an increased risk of fracture. Osteoporosis is most common in postmenopausal woman.

Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is continuous x-ray imaging projecting on a monitor enabling dynamic imaging similar to an x-ray movie.
Fluoroscopy procedures provided includes:

 • Barium swallow
 • Barium meal and follow-through studies
 • Barium enema
 • Videoswallow
 • Cystogram
 • Intravenous pyelogram (IVP)
 • Retrograde urethrogram
 • Hysterosalpingogram
 • Dacrocystogram
 • Defecogram
 • Arthrogram
 • Sinogram
 • Sialogram
 • Portogram
 • Myelogram

Other fluoroscopic guided procedures
In some instances some preparation such as fasting or bowel cleansing will need to be started in advance and will be discussed at the time of appointment scheduling.
It is important to inform the radiographer if you are pregnant or suspected to be pregnant.
It is important to inform the radiographer if you are allergic to iodine or any other significant allergies.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a technique that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create images of the organs and tissues within your body. An MRI scan is a cylinder that is open at both ends. The scanner will make loud tapping noises at certain times during the examination – you will be provided with headphones. As the MRI scanner produces strong magnetic fields, you will need to remove any metal object from your body. Please inform the radiographer of any pacemakers, cochlear implants or other medical implants or instrumentation. It is a painless procedure without any radiation. If you are claustrophobic, you can ask for a sedative. Following the administration of a sedative you will not be able to drive. Sometimes intravenous contrast must be administered. Please inform the radiographer of any allergies or medical conditions. Medicolegal imaging.

Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasound utilizes high frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within the body. We perform a range of ultrasound examinations including cardiac, vascular, abdominal, pelvic and musculoskeletal imaging. Most ultrasound examinations require no preparation with the exception of abdominal (especially gallbladder) imaging where you need to be fasting from the night before. Ultrasound of the pelvis requires a full bladder. You may be asked to drink water and wait until your bladder is full prior to the investigation. Therapeutic procedures including diagnostic and therapeutic aspirations and biopsies.

Computed tomography (CT)

Computed tomography (CT) combines a series of x-rays taken at different angles to create cross-sectional images (slices) of organs, bones and soft tissue.
CT scan provides more information than plain x-rays. It is a painless procedure.
Sometimes intravenous and oral contrast must be administered. Oral contrast is often needed for examinations of your abdomen and it needs to travel through the bowel. You will be provided with the contrast to drink at intervals 1-2 hours before the CT is performed.
Please inform the radiographer of any allergies, medical conditions, prior surgery or if you are pregnant.
Diagnostic CT procedures include:
CT scan of the brain, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine and joints.
Initial staging and follow up imaging.
Therapeutic radiotherapy planning CT scans.
Please bring your previous images if performed at a different centre for comparison.

Oncology CT imaging.
Specialised diagnostic procedures include angiography imaging including cardiac CT.
Therapeutic CT procedures include:
CT –guided perineural infiltration, facet joint infiltration, biopsies.
Initial staging and follow up imaging.
Therapeutic radiotherapy planning CT scans.
Please bring your previous images if performed at a different centre for comparison.

CARDIAC CT
Specialised CT technique utilising intravenous contrast to assess the coronary arteries in detail. The imaging include coronary artery calcium scoring to assess the extent of calcific atherosclerotic plaque in the coronary vasculature.

Digital Mammography & Breast Tomosynthesis

Mammography play a central role in early detection of breast cancer. In our practice low dose digital tomosynthesis including two conventional mammography images are performed as standard. The two conventional images are performed from top to bottom (CC view) and angled from side to side (MLO view) while the breast is compressed between a clear plastic paddle and a detector. The degree of compression with the current latest technology have improved causing less discomfort to the patient. In breast tomosynthesis, the x-ray tube moves in an arc over the compressed breast obtaining multiple images. These images are then reconstructed into a 3-D image. This reduces tissue overlap increasing the sensitivity of tumour detection. Mammography imaging can be combined with ultrasound assessment if needed. Additional mammography modalities and procedures include breast biopsies under mammography or ultrasound guidance and breast MRI.
